Historical Background

This Saturday, March 2 marks 183 years since Texas declared its independence from Mexico. At that time, the citizens of the new Republic of Texas were deep into the Texas Revolution, and in the midst of the Battle of the Alamo.

Despite being continuously outnumbered, the Texians (that's not a typo - the residents of the Republic of Texas and before that Mexican Texas were known as Texians) put up a strong fight, winning key battles and overcoming huge losses. This includes the Goliad Massacre, where more than 400 Texian fighters were executed.

This massacre coupled with the overwhelming defeat at the Alamo inspired the battle cry "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!" General Sam Houston capitalized on this emotion and took the Mexican forces by surprise, scoring a decisive victory against Mexican General Santa Anna and ending the Revolution.

Texas embarked on a period of independence, existing as a sovereign nation until becoming a part of the United States in 1846.
